SARPAT/MOONJ PROJECT

Sarpat is a grass that grows around the water bodies like
river Ganga, Yamuna etc in Uttar Pradesh. This grass is wild
and free, and is used to make pretty baskets, jwelleries and
other decorative items This eventually has resulted into
creating a sustainable livelihoods for people, staying in
different communities. Baskets and other craft items woven
from this grass vary in their design from region to region.
These baskets hold a very special place for brides in India,
who takes them loaded with sweets, grains and other gifts
given to them by their families, when they leave home. Apart
from the popular item basket, a variety of other items such as

table mats, containers, curtains and accessories like
neckpiece earrings and clutches are also made.
